A Trusted Partner Since 1927
It is impossible to tell the history of the company without boring ourselves. The following is the line of succession in as few words as possible. Frank Ponstasuglio opened a window cleaning company, ABC Building Services, in 1927 in San Francisco. He passed the business to his sons, John and George, who expanded to janitorial service. The sons sold to George’s daughter, Gayle and son-in-law, Bob Viola, in 1975. Bob and Gayle grew the business exponentially until they passed it to the next generation. Their children Teresa and Rob opened for business as Genesis Building Services in 2003. For brevity’s sake details have been glossed over or omitted all together, but you get the idea. More than you will ever need to know about your maintenance vendor…
There was never any expectation from Bob and Gayle Viola that any of their three children Rob, Chris and Teresa, should take over the family business. Granted, the fact that it had been family run since their great grandfather opened ABC Building Services in 1927 did exude its own pressure. But Bob and Gayle never asked more of their children than to finish college and be self-sufficient.
All three children were exposed to the business by working summers of after school, but it was not until Genesis Building Services opened in 2003 that Teresa and Rob realized they had been groomed for the position without their knowledge. Their parents raised them using the same rules they did in business. They applied those practices to their everyday life and their children absorbed it. From the simple method of carpet stain removal, “pat, don’t rub.” To the fundamental business guidelines, “it doesn’t matter that you were on good behavior last week, all that counts is what you have done today.”
They were ingrained with the lessons of how to run a successful business.
Teresa Reif, Owner and Founder
As equal partners Teresa and Rob harmoniously share the ownership and responsibilities of Genesis Building Services. Both bring different skills and temperaments necessary to a successful business. No decision is made without mutual consultation and agreement. The following is a bio written of what the other brings to the company.
When my little sister called with the opportunity to work at Genesis my first point of clarification was that I would be working with her, not for her. It seemed an important distinction at the time but Teresa’s management style rendered the point moot. Her ability to identify and promote the skills of those around her in a positive environment means that no one works for Teresa, instead we all work with her toward the clear vision she has for Genesis.
Teresa always has a plan and is confident in any decision she makes. She decided on the University of Colorado in Boulder in her sophomore year of high school. She met her husband at CU and was married three months after graduation. While most postgraduates are trying to “find themselves” Teresa took the reins of a multi-million dollar corporation.
Teresa has the ability to calmly breakdown any complex situation into simple solutions to reach her goals. In the seven years of working with her I have yet to see her back down from any challenge. Unwilling to compromise her personal or professional life she turned her office into a nursery and has brought all three of her sons to work for their first year. More than one operations meeting has been conducted with a baby crawling around the conference room.
Her levelheaded approach remains steady through the ups and downs of the business, the team and me (as a theater major, I tend toward the dramatic). Her trust in the people around her allows her to guide without micromanaging. In turn she is trusted to lead the company with her inexhaustible enthusiasm and sense of purpose.
Rob Viola, Owner and President
As equal partners Teresa and Rob harmoniously share the ownership and responsibilities of Genesis Building Services. Both bring different skills and temperaments necessary to a successful business. No decision is made with out mutual consultation and agreement. The following is a bio written of what the other brings to the company.
I hired Rob in September 2003, six months after Genesis opened. It was the easiest and best decision I have for the company. I had watched Rob fearlessly enter any given situation completely green and exit an expert. He educates himself, understands operations and makes me laugh as only an older brother can. It is a perfect fit.
After graduating from Santa Clara University Rob moved to Chicago to pursue his acting career. Not the typical starving actor, Rob supported his career without assistance by holding down three local jobs at once. Although a skilled actor his supporting jobs soon proved that they truly excelled in business and sales. More importantly, he enjoyed it.
Rob could have remained in Chicago and continued on his rising path but he was not satisfied. When he decided it was time to move back home he saw the potential in working for Genesis. He brought an inexhaustible thirst for knowledge and a wealth of sales experience. Rob is the primary contributor to genesis exponential growth.
Rob’s client relationships are the foundation of our growth. The recurring praise I hear from clients is that they never have to ask something more than once. They make a request once and they know it is done.
Genesis defines itself as a partner not a vendor because of Rob’s ingenuity in solving any property need. From simple customization of a green program to opening a laundry division Rob will think outside of the box. In fact, in Rob’s world, there is no box.
